The Rules

The purpose of these guidelines is to maintain fun and safety for all.

AGREEMENTS

* We agree to play with the SAFETY and FUN of others foremost in our mind.

* We take responsibility for not playing in a way that increases the likelihood of accidental injury.

* We take responsibility for calling any fouls we see no matter who did it or whether it is on our own team or the other.

* We agree not to argue fouls

THERE IS NO LEGAL CONTACT

There is no: checking, holding, grabbing the stick, pushing or contact of any kind. If there is, anyone can call it and there is a turn over without argument or discussion. We are on the honor system to call it correctly and not to make contact.

CONTACT IN THE SLOT

In the slot, blocking with the body is ok. This means that you can move in front of another player and get in his way. But there is still no hard banging him with the body and never any pushing.

HIGHSTICKING

A stick should never go over waist level for any reason. This includes winding up on a shot and the follow through. This is an important safety rule. High stick causes an immediate turnover and disallows any goal scored on the play.

INTERFERENCE

If you wrap your arm around another player and your stick is not on the ground playing the puck it is interference. Holding off another player with a free hand is interference. Setting a "pick" and blocking a players path is interference.

STICK ON STICK PLAY

You can lift another players stick from underneath. You can never chop down on his stick. A one handed swing at another player's stick with yours is illegal. If the other player does not have the puck then playing their stick is interference. The only exception is in the slot area (defined by the basketball lines) if an offensive player is there you can tie up his player's stick with yours.

THE CREASE

In half court the crease is an invisible line from the two goal posts to the front of the blue line. In full court the crease is the goal posts to an invisible line three feet out. Any goal scored with an opposing player in the crease is disallowed even if they had nothing to do with the goal.

FREEZING THE PUCK

If the goalie freezes the puck it is considered a stoppage of play. If any portion of his body was in the crease, he can pass it out to his team or call "corner" and his team takes the puck out in the corner. The goalie cannot start to set up for a pass and then change his mind and call corner. Once he makes sets up to pass or throw the puck play has resumed. The goalie can throw the puck to a team member as long as it is received in the defensive zone. The offensive team can defend against that pass as long as they are behind the redline outside the crease with their body or stick.

If the goalie freezes the puck while outside crease, the other team takes out the puck in the corner.

TAKING THE PUCK OUT IN THE CORNER

This is considered a stoppage of play just as a faceoff in real hockey. The defensive team gives the puck to the offensive team to begin play. The defensive player must keep their feet and stick behind the red dot, roughly one stick length (47") from the offensive player.

PASSES BY THE GOALIE

The goalie can hand pass to his teammates as long as they receive the pass on the defensive side of the yellow line. If the pass is received over the line then it is a turnover. If the goalie passes using his stick it can be received anywhere.

HAND PASS

An offensive player cannot receive a pass in the offensive zone from one of his team mates. If a defensive player hand passes to the offensive zone, it's not a hand pass unless his team mate in the offensive zone touches it. Defense to defense can hand pass but you cannot close your hand on the puck and change it's direction.

GOALS MUST GO IN OFF AN OFFENSIVE PLAYERS STICK

(As per the vote of 11/4/09) A goal must originate off an offensive players stick. A goal that goes in off any part of an offensive players body is not a goal. A goal can still go off a defensive player as long as it originates from an offensive player's stick or another defensive player. The goalie does not count as a defensive player.

OFFSIDES (This Rule is no longer in effect as per the vote of 11/4/08)

In half court the center yellow line is the offsides line. If a team shoots the puck from their side of the yellow line and scores but no one touches it (excluding the goalie) it is not a goal. The puck must be completely over the line. It does not matter where a players feet are.

EQUIPMENT

Goalies must wear eye protection.

If the goalie's mask comes off the play is stopped immediately and the team with possession takes it out in the corner.

Eye protection and cups are recommended for everyone. Gloves, shin guards, and knee pads can also be useful.

Only all plastic Cosum sticks with plastic blades are allowed. No filling the sticks with wood or other substances to make them stiffer. This is for the safety of everyone. A six inch wood extension is allowed for taller players. You may wrap the stick with tape to make it stiffer.

Rules

Our prime directive is to play with the safety of others in mind.

We purposely avoid contact.
